Popular Nigerian dancer, Kafayat Oluwatoyin Shafau, better known as Kaffy, has spoken about the difficulties she has faced in relationships as a single mother.
The mother of two revealed that she was once rejected outrightly by a man who told her he could never consider dating or marrying her simply because she had children.
Speaking on a recent episode of The Honest Bunch podcast, the 45-year-old dance instructor and fitness coach criticised the stereotypes against single parents, arguing that divorce or single parenthood does not automatically make someone a less suitable partner.
“I have had somebody tell me because I’m a single mother, he can’t even think of dating me because I have two children… What makes you think that a woman who has been divorced is not even the better candidate if she had worked on herself? What’s the guarantee that two single people today are not going to be divorced people tomorrow?” she asked.
Kaffy further questioned society’s obsession with marrying “fresh” partners, noting that even first marriages often fail despite cultural expectations.
She added that single parents who have gone through self-growth could, in fact, make stronger partners than individuals with no previous marital experience.
Kaffy married Joseph Ameh, a music director and former drummer for P-Square, in 2015. Their marriage ended in 2022.
