Perm Sec tasks workers on workplace hygiene, ethics

Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Dr. Salihu A. Usman, has charged workers in the Ministry and across the country to maintain high standards of hygiene and uphold strong work ethics, warning that poor sanitary habits and unprofessional conduct make the workplace unconducive and undermine productivity.

Dr. Usman gave the charge in Abuja while addressing staff during a training programme on “Hygiene Practices and Work Ethics” organised for the Ministry’s facility management personnel. He described the initiative as a laudable and exemplary effort, noting that it was personally conceived and driven by a staff member, Mrs. Sinnda Dina Simon.

According to the Permanent Secretary, the training reflected a rare sense of responsibility and innovation. “This programme is particularly special because it is not just management-driven, but a staff-initiated effort,” he said. “It shows that positive change often begins from within, and when staff take ownership of their work environment, the entire system benefits through improved service delivery and enhanced organizational reputation.”

Dr. Usman emphasised that hygiene and ethics form the foundation of effective facility management, stressing that both are indispensable to efficiency and professionalism. “Hygiene ensures we maintain a healthy and safe workspace conducive to productivity, while sound work ethics foster integrity, discipline, and professionalism in carrying out our official duties,” he stated

He urged participants to take the training seriously and ensure the lessons reflect in their daily conduct. “Let what you learn here be seen in how you handle assignments and maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of our shared workspaces,” he advised, assuring that the Ministry remains committed to initiatives that promote staff development and institutional efficiency.

In her welcome address, Mrs. Dina Simon, an Administrative Officer I in the Ministry, explained that the training was inspired by her observations during routine checks, where she noticed gaps in hygiene practices and general work attitude among staff. She said the programme was designed to bridge those gaps and strengthen commitment to a cleaner and more professional work culture.

“This initiative was born out of a desire to improve our work environment and promote good hygiene,” she said. “By applying what we learn today, we contribute not only to a healthier and more productive workplace but also to the image and effectiveness of the Ministry.”

Mrs. Simon expressed appreciation to the Ministry’s management and colleagues who supported the programme, expressing hope that it would become a regular feature in the Ministry’s staff development agenda.
