The Argentine captain made the histroy after he netted a brace in a 2-0 victory against Austria on June 22, 2026 during the 2026 World Cup, bringing his career World Cup tally to 18 goals.

With the achievement, Messi surpasses Germany’s Miroslav Klose.

With his historic 17th and 18th World Cup goals, Messi officially claimed the most prestigious goalscoring record in international football.
