Super Eagles climb higher in latest FIFA ranking

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have climbed four places in the current FIFA/Coca-Cola monthly rankings, which were revealed on Thursday morning.

Despite their round-of-16 exit at the just concluded TotalEnergies 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Super Eagles have risen to 32nd in the world rankings owing largely to their impressive group stage performance.

Nigeria is now Africa’s third best team, after Morocco and Senegal, the African champions. Recall that the Austin Eguoavoen-managed side had previously been ranked below Senegal, Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, the latter to whom they lost in the AFCON 2019 second round.

However, the Fennecs have slid 14 places to 43rd in the globe, while Tunisia has slipped from 30th to 36th.

Senegal’s Teranga Lions rose two places to 18th in the world, while Morocco climbed four places to 24th. However, after finishing bottom of their AFCON group, Ghana, Nigeria’s opponent in the two-legged 2022 World Cup playoffs, plummeted nine places to 61st in the world.

Meanwhile, Belgium’s Red Devils remain the world’s top-ranked team, followed by Brazil, France, Argentina, and England. Italy, the European champions, is sixth, with Spain, Portugal, Denmark, and the Netherlands rounding out the top ten.
