Swedish audio streaming and media service provider, Spotify, has unveiled its list of the top five female Afrobeats artists in the last 12 months, with Nigerian star Sarah Oyinkansola Aderibigbe, popularly known as Ayra Starr, emerging at number one.
The “Rush” crooner, described by Spotify as “the pop star of Afrobeats”, led the pack ahead of fellow Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Tems, who ranked second.
American-Cameroonian sensation Libianca placed third, while Malian-French artist Aya Nakamura and British-Nigerian singer Darkoo completed the top five.
Notably absent from the ranking was South Africa’s Tyla, despite her sweeping wins at major Afrobeats award ceremonies over the past year.
Spotify also released its Top 5 Afrobeats Artists in Latin America, a list dominated entirely by Nigerians. Rema secured the number one spot, Ayra Starr followed at second, CKay ranked third, while Burna Boy and Wizkid came in fourth and fifth, respectively.
