‘I can never get over it’ – Niniola recounts father’s assassination

Popular Nigerian singer, Niniola, has said the trauma of watching her father, Simeon Apata, a retired Nigerian Army Brigadier-General, being assassinated is an experience she can never get over.

Gen. Apata (rtd.) was assassinated by gunmen on January 8, 1995, in Lagos, in the presence of his family.

Revisiting the tragic incident in a recent interview with Jay On Air, Niniola said it is hard for her to get over it because she was her late father’s favourite child.

“I was in the house when my dad was murdered. And I was his favourite child so you can imagine [the trauma]. Till today, I’m not over it. I can never get over it,” she said.

“I was very young when it happened. I don’t remember my exact age then but it wasn’t a good memory.”

Niniola’s sister, Teni, who is also a singer, disclosed in 2023 that watching her dad being assassinated at the tender age of two left her traumatised.
