Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has officially named the road leading to the Chinua Achebe International Airport, Umueri, after his immediate predecessor, Chief Willie Obiano, in recognition of his contributions to the state’s development.
The road, now christened Willie Obiano Boulevard, was unveiled during a commissioning ceremony attended by dignitaries across the state. Governor Soludo described the event as a symbolic gesture of unity, continuity, and gratitude, honouring Obiano’s legacy, particularly his role in initiating the airport project and constructing the International Convention Centre in Awka.
“This is more than a symbolic act,” Soludo declared. “It is a message to our people and to history—we must honour those who served our state with dedication. Chief Willie Obiano did his best, and today, we recognise that.”
He likened the naming of the road to “Bill Clinton Drive” in Abuja, which leads to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, calling it a fitting tribute to “a man who dared to dream and deliver.”
Governor Soludo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive governance, highlighting interventions in neglected parts of the state such as Okpoko and Olumbanasa. He recounted his emotional visit to Enugu-Otu, Aguleri, describing how he was moved to tears by the lack of infrastructure there and pledged continued efforts to ensure no community is left behind.
“The philosophy remains—one state, one people, one agenda,” the governor said. “Every area must be carried along. The North, with its vast land and infrastructural gaps, has been prioritised for development.”
The commissioning attracted top government officials, traditional rulers, and political stakeholders. Among them were Deputy Governor Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim; Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze; Chief of Staff Ernest Ezeajughi; and several commissioners.
Traditional rulers and community leaders from Anambra East and Oyi lauded the gesture. His Royal Majesty, Igwe (Sir) Ben Emeka of Umueri, commended Soludo for completing the road and urged for further infrastructure linking Anambra East, Ayamelum, and Anambra West to the airport.
Igwe P.N. Anugwu (Ogilisi Igbo), Chairman of Anambra North Traditional Rulers’ Council, praised the inclusive development model and appealed for the extension of the Anambra West road beyond Nzam.
Members of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Barr. Obiora Nweke and Hon. Innocent Ojike, also expressed appreciation to Soludo, saying the decision reflects fairness and vision.
The unveiling of the boulevard was celebrated with applause and cultural displays, underscoring the symbolic weight of the moment. Concluding the ceremony, Governor Soludo said, “We are building Anambra and its children for the future. Let history remember that we honoured our heroes, united our people, and laid a foundation that cannot be shaken.”
