It’s no longer news that ahead of the 2023 general elections, three Nollywood stars, Tonto Dikeh, Funke Akindele, and Caroline Ekanem have secured the deputy governor slots.
In previous elections, Nollywood stars like Kate Henshaw, Desmond Elliot, and Yul Edochie have at different times contested elective positions.

Unknown to many, the three actresses are venturing into the murky waters of politics for the first time – after being a supporter of different politicians at different times.
Tonto blazed the trail in the race for power in 2023 by joining the African Democratic Congress and accepting to run with Tonte Ibraye for the seat of Rivers state governor and deputy governor.
Funke joined the race to become Lagos deputy governorship candidate the Peoples Democratic Party’s flagbearer, Olajide Adediran, and his team announced her as his running mate. In her character, the Jenifa star has delved into her new mission and has been speaking on what she would be offering the people of Lagos state if elected.
For Caroline, the actress and reality show star pitched her tent with African Action Congress (AAC) for Akwa Ibom, where she is running with Iboro Otu in the governorship race for the soul of Akwa Ibom.
Many Nollywood practitioners have expressed delight at the bravery and determination of the three actresses. Their colleagues have noted that the decision of the actresses to join political parties and vie for top elective positions is a good one for the industry as it shows that there are practitioners capable of contesting and winning elections while still making fans happy with their film roles.
