LAWMA, KAI, Police seal markets along Cele under bridge corridor over illegal dumping

Officials of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) Project WISE team, in a joint operation with the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) and the Nigeria Police Force, have sealed markets along the Cele Under Bridge corridor due to illegal dumping of refuse on the highway.

The enforcement action, carried out on Thursday, 30th July 2026, followed repeated environmental sanitation violations by traders and business owners in the area.

The sealing of the markets is aimed at restoring cleanliness, protecting public infrastructure, and ensuring compliance with the Lagos State environmental laws.

The affected markets will remain closed until the necessary sanitation standards are met and the authorities are satisfied with the level of compliance.

The operation underscores the State Government’s zero-tolerance stance on environmental violations and its commitment to maintaining a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Lagos.

The Authority noted that despite repeated warnings and the availability of assigned PSP operators, traders and business owners along the Cele Under Bridge corridor had persisted in dumping refuse illegally on the highway, defacing the environment and posing serious public health risks.

The joint enforcement operation is part of a broader strategy to ensure that all commercial entities comply with environmental regulations and contribute to a cleaner environment.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to enforcing environmental laws and ensuring that all residents and businesses comply with sanitation regulations.

He urged traders and business owners to embrace responsible waste management practices and patronise approved PSP operators, warning that non-compliance would attract severe sanctions.

The enforcement operation is expected to continue across other parts of the State where similar violations persist, as part of the government’s commitment to maintaining a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Lagos.
