Maryam Sanda to be hanged for killing husband after 3 years
Three years after the death of Maryam Sanda’s husband, an FCT High Court has sentenced her to death by hanging.
On Monday, January 27, 2020, Justice Yusuf Halilu convicted Sanda on circumstantial evidence for killing her husband, Bilyaminu Bello.
Following the pronouncement of her sentence, Sanda, a mother of two, her mother and her other relatives broke down in tears.
Sanda’s mother, Maimuna Aliyu, who was also in court, sped out weeping uncontrollably forcing the convicted Sanda to rush out of the courtroom in tears.
The teary Sanda was ordered back to the courtroom by the judge after the drama.
Sanda’s lawyer attempted to make a plea for mercy but was rejected by the judge.
The late Bello was a nephew of former chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Haliru Bello.
Police said the killing was premeditated and accused Maimuna Aliyu, Sanda’s mother; Aliyu, her brother; and Sadiya Aminu, her housemaid; of tampering with evidence by cleaning the blood and other proofs from the crime scene, but charges were later dropped.
