Coronavirus: Controversy over Italian alleged attempt to escape isolation centre
The 44-year-old Italian, who has been diagnosed for having coronavirus has attempted to flee the isolation centre in Lagos state, Nigeria.
Punch reports that the affected Italian, who is currently being quarantined at the Mainland Hospital, Yaba, Lagos, made attempt to escape after complaining of heat as well as the state of the isolation centre.
The report quoted a source as saying the Italian wanted to run away on Thursday, February 27 after complaining of the state of the isolation centre insisting it was too hot.
The source was further quoted as saying the Italian almost ran away and is still threatening to do the same if the chance comes through.
On Friday, February 28, Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, said that the state government had built a facility to handle the situation, adding that the patient was getting better.
In his words, Hamzat said, “It is a lab that can accommodate 100 for now, but it is only one bed that is occupied today. Hopefully, it wouldn’t spread. We are ready and we are well equipped. He (the patient) is there and he is getting better. He is steady. The doctors say he is going to be fine.’’
In a quick response to the planned escape claims, the Lagos state government says the story is untrue.
The state government insists that the Italian is in a stable condition and has been moved to a better and more conducive place.
Nigeria recorded its first case of Coronavirus on Wednesday, February 26, 2020.
